Try to obtain and read a copy of ‘Transitions in the Early Years’ by H. Fabian and A. Dunlop, published by Routledge, 2002.N.B. Your local library service should have a copy of this book.
Look at your setting’s policies on settling a new child into school and moving to a new class. Do you know them well? Do you follow them yourself?
Think about the feelings a child might have when coming into a new school or class. At what parts of the day do you think they might need the most support?
It is hard for very young children to understand phrases like “Mummy is coming back later”. When is later? How can you help an early years child to understand the timescale of their day?
Young Minds, the voice for young people’s mental health and well-being, have produced a document on ‘The transition from primary to secondary school’ which looks at how an understanding of mental health and emotional well-being can help children, schools and families.
Use the internet to research different strategies with dealing with transitions e.g.moving from nursery to primary school, moving to secondary school, helping a child to deal with bereavement.
