Understand the roles and responsibilities of the Early Years Practitioner in recognising signs and symptoms of illness in babies and young children

Watch ‘Spotting sepsis in under 5’s’ produced by the NHS. Sepsis is a deadly reaction to infection. If a child is unwell with a bug or infection - keep an eye on them. The following symptoms may be signs of sepsis.

Use the internet or your local library to research some common childhood illnesses in more depth.
Monitor local and national news for information about increased concern for particular illnesses e.g. measles, norovirus, meningitis etc. Make sure you know what precautions can be taken to reduce the likelihood of the illness affecting children and adults in your setting.
Find out about childhood immunisations and the illnesses they are aimed at. Consider why children are routinely immunised against these particular illnesses.
