Understand legislation and statutory guidance for practice in the early years

Case Study

The Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage states “For children whose home language is not English, providers must take reasonable steps to provide opportunities to develop and use their home language in play and learning, supporting their language development at home.” You have been asked to bring some ideas for how your setting can meet this requirement to the next staff meeting even though you only speak English.
  1. How might a practitioner provide opportunities to develop a child’s home language in play and learning if they do not speak the child’s home language?
  2. Where might the practitioner get information and support to meet this requirement?
  3. A colleague has told you that providing opportunities for children in another language is not right as the equality policy means all children have to be treated the same. Do you agree?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
