Understand whistleblowing

Case Study

You have just finished your break and are going back to your assigned playroom. As you enter the room you realise that there is only the Room Leader in the room and one of the children is also missing. You are told that one of the children needed the toilet and was taken into the bathroom. Your Room Leader asks you to check that everything is OK as they have been gone quite a while. When you enter the bathroom, you notice the setting manager stuffing her mobile phone into her pocket while the child is still sitting on the toilet, crying. Imagine this had actually occurred at your setting and answer the questions below:
  1. Which of your setting’s policies and procedures are relevant to the situation described?
  2. What aspects of what you have seen might be cause for concern?
  3. What if anything should you do about what you have seen?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
