Case Study
A child in your care is 4 years old but is not yet able to distinguish one sound from another. He appears unable to hear and say the sounds in words in the order in which they occur. For example, his name is Ben but he cannot tell you the sound his name begins with.
- Which stage of language and communication development does Ben appear to be at?
- Should you be concerned about Ben’s language and communication development?
- Whom might you talk to about this?
- What other areas of development could be affected by Ben’s current skills in linking sounds and letters?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
