Case Study
One of your colleagues has mentioned to you that she thinks one of her key children has a speech problem. She says that even though he is 3 years old there are lots of words that he cannot pronounce and sometimes she finds it really difficult to understand what he is saying.
She also mentions that she thinks that it could be a ‘genetic problem’ as his mother’s speech is ‘awful too’.
- What factors could be influencing this child’s speech development?
- How might this child’s speech and language skills be supported within the setting?
- Is there anything else your setting could do to support this child’s speech development?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
