Know about adult and child-initiated play

Case Study

It is summer term and your room of 3 to 4-year olds is due to take part in your setting’s sports day. There will be short running races, bean bag tossing, and balancing a bean bag on the head. This year it has been decided to combine this with the graduation ceremony as some of the children will be starting school. This means that parents will have to take less time off work but it also means quickly getting the children into their graduation robes.
  1. What adult-led activities can you organise to prepare the children?
  2. What resources can you set up for child-initiated play?
  3. What are the benefits of role playing the sports day and the graduation ceremony?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
