Be able to support healthy eating in an Early Years Setting

Case Study

Your settings’ policy for snacks asks that parents provide them for the children each day. You and your room leader have realised that many of these snacks are full of sugar and salt; however, the parents provide them for the children because, as they say, ‘That is all my child will eat’. You and your room leader are determined to support the children in eating a healthier diet but know that you have to get the children to support the change as well as the parents.
  1. Think about the things that the children could be eating for a snack that are healthy and better for them.
  2. How can you introduce these foods to the children so that they enjoy them and prefer them to the snacks they are currently eating?
  3. Where can you suggest that the parents find more information about healthy snacks for children in the early years?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
