Be able to support positive behaviour

Case Study

Ramien is struggling to behave well in the afternoons and his key worker is getting quite frustrated. Clara, the key worker, has a sticker chart for him and gives him a lot more attention in the afternoons, but it does not seem to be helping. She decides to talk to his mum about it. Clara asks whether anything has changed recently that might be affecting the way Ramien feels. Mum replies that just recently her mother has moved in with them and he is rather spoilt at the moment. If Mum says no to him, he asks Grandma who says yes; this is causing a lot of issues. Clara and the mother talk about this in some detail and decide on a plan of action. They will bring Grandma in next week so that they can all have a chat together, and so that she can hear first-hand what is happening. Clara will explain that without consistency around unwanted behaviour Ramien is getting confused and does not know who to listen to, so he ends up doing whatever he pleases. Ramien’s mother feels positive that once Grandma is aware that this is creating concern and frustration for all concerned, she will work with them to sort things out. Clara suggests that they give Grandma an opportunity to suggest a reward plan and help to maintain it when Ramien is at home.
  1. Do you think Clara has handled the situation well?
  2. Should the grandmother be involved? If so, what might the benefits of this be?
  3. Should Clara keep any records of this issue and how she handles it?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
