Case Study

Joseph is 22 months old, he will be 3 years old in August. He is due to move from his base room (Toddlers) to pre-school in September. Joseph is a quiet child, with a close bond with you, his key person. He has been finding it more difficult recently to settle because his best friend has already moved to pre-school. He cries when he leaves his Mum in the morning but does settle with you especially if you go to play in the construction area. He loves to build buildings and often talks about the people or animals who live in the buildings he has built. He is making progress in the prime areas typical for his age, although he does not yet separate from his parents confidently or express his own preferences.
- How will you prepare Joseph for this move to pre-school?
- What do you think Joseph’s needs will be leading up to September and how can these be supported by you his key person?
- What can you do to support Joseph?
- What do you think Joseph’s needs will be during September and how can these be supported?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
