Elsie is 8 months old, she was 9 weeks premature at birth and had many complications. She spent her first 3 months in hospital before she was strong enough to come home. Although Elsie is small for her age, she is developing well; she can sit up with support and is attempting to crawl when she is placed on her tummy to play.

Elsie’s mummy Joanne will be returning to work in 8 weeks time. Elsie has only been left for a few hours with her daddy and grandparents. Joanne is extremely anxious about leaving Elsie at nursery.

1. As a key person what information will you need to know about Elsie?
2. When Joanne and Elsie come for their settling in visits what things might you do to help Elsie feel safe and to reassure Joanne?
3. How will you plan for Elsie’s individual needs during the first few weeks at nursery?
