Understand the role of the Early Years practitioner in minimising ill health in children

Case Study
Andrew was a premature baby and spent the first 4 months of his life in hospital. His mum is quite protective of him especially when it comes to play. This morning you happened to mention that as there had been a hard frost overnight, you are going to take the children outside this morning to look at frost patterns. Mum responded that none of the children should go outside today as it is too cold and it will make them all ill.
- How should you respond to Andrew’s Mum?
- What health benefits are there for children playing outside (even if it is cold)?
- What health risks are there for children who play indoors all day?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
