As part of your ‘Autumn’ theme you are planning to take a group of pre-school children on an outing to the local park. You plan to pick blackberries to bring back to your setting and make into a blackberry pie. You have carried out a risk assessment and have found that all the risks are mild and manageable.

You have had mixed reactions from parents. Some think it is fantastic; one parent has sent their child in with apples from their garden to add to the pie. However one is reluctant to give her permission for her child to go on the trip as she believes the environment you have described is dangerous and she doesn’t want her daughter to come back with dirty clothes

1. List all the areas of learning and development that would be met during this opportunity, especially focusing on the aspects of Understanding the World.
2. List the considerations that you would need to make to carry out this opportunity, such as staffing, resources, children’s individual needs, language introduced etc.
3. Use this evidence to write a reflective account or create a handout, explaining how this opportunity would be beneficial for children.

It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
