Understand strategies which support emergent literacy

Case Study

Jennifer is 4½ years old and on track to meet all the early learning goals by the end of the year. She enjoys the phonics programme that you setting uses and always joins in with the literacy activities. You have just received a telephone call from Jennifer’s father asking if he and Jennifer’s mother could meet with you at the end of today’s session. They are concerned that Jennifer will be moving to primary school in a few months but still doesn’t know her letters.
  1. How will you prepare for this meeting with Jennifer’s parents?
  2. What could you do to help Jennifer’s parents understand the phonic system your setting uses to support children’s emergent literacy?
  3. How will you explain Jennifer’s development in relation to the expectations of children entering primary school?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
