Understand how opportunities support children’s emergent mathematical development

Case Study

A new member of staff has just joined the setting and is working in your room. You have been asked to help them to settle in. You notice that when the children are playing, and the new practitioner is supporting them, that she is missing lots of opportunities to help them develop their mathematical skills.
  1. Plan a conversation that you will have with the new member of staff to explain what you have observed and why it is important for her to take opportunities to support children’s emergent mathematical development.
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
