Be able to implement an opportunity which promotes the personal, social and emotional development of children

Case Study

You are working in a room of twenty four children aged 3 to 4 years old. At the end of each play session the room leader asks you and another member of staff to tidy away all the toys while she ‘keeps the children occupied with a story’.It is your belief that the children would benefit by being encouraged and allowed to help put the toys away. The room leader tells you in front of the children that they won’t be able to do it properly and they would be too slow.
  1. How would helping to tidy up benefit the personal, social or emotional development of the children?
  2. What effect might the room leader’s comments have on the children in the room?
  3. What solutions could you suggest to resolve this issue?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
