Understand how to support children and young people to assess and manage risk for themselves

Case Study

You are working in a village with a group of year six children who are due to start senior school in two months. All the senior schools are in the main town, and some of the children will be travelling by bus, some by train, and all will have to cross major roads on their journeys.
  1. How can you begin to prepare the children for the risks involved?
  2. How can you work with the parents to make sure you are working together to help the children learn the risks, and how to deal with situations safely?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
