Understand the expected pattern of development for children and young people from birth to 19 years

Case Study

Working with a class of 11-year olds you have notices that one boy, Jackson, is struggling to understand long and complex sentences. He rarely speaks, and when he does it is in short sentences and he finds it hard to find the right words. Jackson is new to the school.
  1. Is Jackson’s development appropriate for his age?
  2. Are his speech and comprehension skills something to be concerned about?
  3. What can you do to support Jackson?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
