Be able to provide maths support to help learners access teaching and learning

Case Study

Meera has dyscalculia; she finds it difficult to recognise numbers and put them in order. She struggles to write numbers down accurately which makes adding up difficult. She also prefers tasks that can be tackled through drawings or diagrams as this helps her to be methodical, and organise her thoughts more clearly. Meera lacks confidence and becomes very stressed during mathematical tasks, and the stress means she often does not process the instructions given by the teacher and cannot remember what she has to do.
  1. How would you try to develop Meera’s confidence so that she is able to find her own solution to problems?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
