Understand the special educational needs of children and young people with cognition and learning needs

Case Study

Liam is 11 years old and has Down’s syndrome. He has impaired vision and moderate learning difficulties which affect his language and communication skills. You are working with Liam in his class at school and you know that there is a upcoming trip to France and Belgium to tie up with history lessons.
  1. What will you have to consider before deciding if Liam can join the trip?
  2. What could be the impact of either decision?
  3. How might Liam’s cognitive difficulties impact his understanding of the decision?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
