Case Study
You are leading a play activity for children aged 6-8. Some of the children are playing together when a conflict erupts because a child who is new to the school wants to join in and use the art supplies they are currently using. You observe carefully and see that while they are making progress with trying to sort the conflict out, their negotiations are clearly leading to the new child being excluded and not having a fair chance to use the art supplies.
- Should you intervene in this conflict?
- How could you support the children to resolve the conflict?
- What would the outcome be for the new child if you do not intervene?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
