Case Study
You are working with a group of children who are exhibiting challenging behaviour. Adam is being particularly disruptive and the class teacher tells him to leave the room and go to work in the library. After lunch the class teacher takes the register and Adam is not present. One of the other children says they saw Adam leaving the school premises saying he was ‘going to get’ the teacher who had sent him from the classroom.
Consider the events leading up to the exclusion and the possible repercussions following the report that Adam had left school. Write a short report to the headteacher outlining your understanding of the issues arising from the events and opportunities to learn from it. Include the following in your report:
- What school policies would be relevant to the events arising from the case study?
- What are the potential consequences of the actions taken by the teacher and Adam?
- What steps might the school take to ensure that such an incident is avoided in the future?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
