Understand the wider context in which schools operate

Case Study

You are working in a school and have been told that you will be given responsibility for supporting the teacher designated to safeguard the welfare of the children in the school. One of your tasks will be to ensure that the staff are kept up to date with current policy and procedures surrounding safeguarding issues. You have been asked to clarify what the school needs to do to ensure they meet the requirements for vetting staff. Write a brief report for a staff meeting to include the following information:
  • Relevant safeguarding legislation, and staff responsibility in the safeguarding of children and young people.
  • What actions to take if you have a concern about the safety and/or well-being of an individual.
  • How data protection legislation relates to safeguarding.
  • The current rules about vetting staff.
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
