Case Study
There is a child in your setting whom you have identified as having speech and language difficulties. You suspect that the root cause is that her parents are both working long hours and she has been in the care of a number of au pairs who do not speak much English. You have called the parents in to discuss your concerns.
- How will you communicate your concern to the parents?
- Think of three ways in which their child is being disadvantaged by her delayed speech.
- Think of three long term problems for the child if the parents do not work with the setting to help the child to make improvements.
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
