Case Study

Liam is 5.  He has an older sister Susan who is 9. Liam and Susan’s parents are going through a divorce and Liam is struggling to come to terms with the unfolding events.  Liam tells you “It’s my fault Mummy and Daddy argue all the time. I can’t remember a time when they didn’t shout at each other, but Susan says she can. It was before I was born. I know Mummy, Daddy and Susan all wish I wasn’t here then everything would be alright”.

  4. Should you say anything to Liam and Susan’s parents?
  5. What might you do to help Liam understand the family’s situation?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
