Be able to respond to the health needs of children and young people

Case Study

Jemima is 15 and has been in and out of care for some years since her mother’s death. Although she has been cared for by members of her extended family in the past the relationship is strained and she does not want to return to them. You are becoming increasingly concerned about Jemima as she is becoming more withdrawn and less communicative with you of late. You never see her eat and yesterday you noticed what you think are cuts on her forearms.
  1. How should you approach Jemima about your concerns?
  2. Where might you look for information to support Jemima?
  3. What action will you take if Jemima does not want to discuss her situation, or you feel she is not being entirely honest with you?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
