Case Study

You have just become the leader of administrative staff of a large recreational facility. A number of your team are long serving with seniority plus you have a mixture of younger, less experienced staff. You have become aware that there are workplace conflict issues. These seem to result from poor communication between the staff, and the response of the previous team leader was to ignore the underlying issues and simply keep the conflicted parties away from each other. The friction between the younger and older members of staff has escalated from disrespectful behaviour – negativity, sarcasm, belittling – to bullying and confrontation.
  1. How would you try to get to the root cause or causes of the conflict?
  2. What steps could you put in place to start to resolve the issues?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary.
