Promote access to healthcare for individuals with learning disabilities

Case Study

Jenny is a service user in a home catering for four people with learning disabilities. As the new manager you find that Jenny’s records say that she has had no healthcare screening.Jenny has Down’s syndrome and is overweight. She has a regular boyfriend who also has Down’s syndrome and you suspect that they may soon will be, if not already are, sexually active.
  1. What health screening do you think Jenny needs?
  2. How might you guide staff to support her to consider her health needs and the consequences of the results of any screening?
  3. Jenny has capacity to make her own decisions in line with the Mental Capacity Act so how will you encourage her to attend screening and health advice that is necessary for her?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
