Case Study

Harry is a 29-year-old man who was fit and well until he was knocked off his bike by a lorry while travelling home through the London streets one night. Harry suffered an ABI.Before the accident, Harry owned his own flat and had a high profile job in the finance sector. Since the accident, Harry has been in hospital and then briefly at a rehabilitation centre. He is receiving physiotherapy and occupational therapy. It has been agreed that he will be cared for at home by his parents, but at times he doesn’t know who they are. He also has memory loss and some behaviour management and mobility issues.Harry’s parents feel alone and isolated, although the staff at the hospital have tried to reassure them. A home care team is going to be set up for Harry, led by manager Lily. Lily arranges to meet Harry’s parents before he comes home. All of the equipment they need is ready and available for his homecoming.
  1. If you were Lily, what would you focus on when meeting with the parents?
  2. What emotions and difficulties do you think that the parents are going through?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
