Case Study

Judy, a 35 -year-old woman who has high support needs, has lived at home with her mother until her mother’s sudden death. A decision needs to be made about where Judy will live in the future and a referral is made to the IMCA service. The IMCA meets with Judy’s social worker and is told that Judy does not have any spoken language, that she is unable to sign, and has very limited methods of communication. In the short term, carers are going in daily and staying with Judy while decisions are made. The IMCA then meets with Judy and finds that it is not possible to get a view from her about her future accommodation.
- What decision would the IMCA make in this case?
- If you were the acting as advocate, what decision might you make?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
