Understand the kinds of influences that affect children and young people’s development

Case Study

You are working with a five-year-old called Kyme. Kyme’s parents work long hours and do not have much time to spend with him. You notice that his social skills are poor and his language delayed and believe that this may be due to his rather isolated experiences at home. Upon speaking to the parents, your line manager discovers that Kyme cannot have friends to play because his parents are too busy and, when he leaves the setting, they take him home and put him straight to bed because they are so tired.
  1. How can you compensate for Kyme’s lack of social experiences outside of the setting?
  2. What activities might you set up to help his development?
  3. What help might you seek to enable you to support Kyme?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
