Understand health and safety when providing craft activities for young children

Case Study

You have noticed that a 4-year-old child in your care becomes very excited when you provide her with paint and other craft materials, and becomes upset when it is time to pack away – sometimes even having loud tantrums. You have asked her if there is any way she could continue her projects with her parents but she has tearfully told you that there are no craft materials at home, and her parents dislike the messiness of such activities and tell her to read quietly or just play with her toys instead.
  1. How can you tactfully explain to the parents the importance of their daughter being encouraged to develop her creative interests at home, and how they can support her?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
