Listening to and talking with a young child

Case Study

Carlos is three years old and very shy. If he is in a group of children choosing a song or story he never offers any of his choices, as he does not like to speak when other children are around. He was once laughed at for stuttering, and his mum gets quite anxious and cross when he cannot get his words out.
  1. How can you help and support Carlos and his mother?
  2. How can you help him to make his choices in a way that he feels safe and is not the centre of attention, until he gets more used to hearing his voice and accepting it?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
