Case Study
Lucy is a very cheerful little girl aged 4 who loves art and crafts and particularly likes to do craft with her babysitter. However, Lucy’s mum will not allow her to use scissors because she thinks it will be too dangerous for Lucy. Lucy is starting to get upset about this because her friend from the playgroup uses scissors. When she is asked Lucy’s mum explains she does not want Lucy using scissors because she is partially sighted and it is dangerous for her. The babysitter understands her concern but talks to mum about some of the benefits to Lucy of having a go in a supervised environment.
- Is the babysitter right to confront the mum over this?
- Is it safe for a partially sighted child of that age to use scissors?
- What benefits would there be to the child of having a go at home as well as at playgroup?
- How might you be able to support a child in learning to use scissors under these circumstances?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
