Young children’s development

Case Study

Josiah is 11 months old and lives with his single mum in a flat on the fifth floor of a tower block. The lift regularly gets stuck and Josiah’s mum cannot be bothered to spend the time and energy to get out with him when she would have to walk down the stairs or risk getting stuck in the lift. Josiah’s mum is becoming depressed and is not spending any real time talking to Josiah or cuddling him.
  1. What do you think the consequences of this situation will be in terms of each of the following:
    • Josiah's development
    • Josiah's contentment
    • Josiah's security
  2. How could Josiah’s mum get help to improve the situation?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
