Understand the rights of parents in relation to the welfare and upbringing of own children and understand parental responsibilities in relation to own children

Case Study

You are a young parent with a two-year-old child. You want to go back to work now that your child is two, and you feel the need for more social contact. You hope to be able to enjoy a night out each week with friends but money is in short supply.
  1. What can you do?
  2. How will you sort out childcare? Will it be a childminder, nanny, day-care setting, or friend that you entrust your child to?
  3. Who will care for the child if you go out in the evening?
  4. Consider all your options and explain the benefits and shortfalls of each of them.
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the responses you have to the above scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague or friend and ask them to tell you whether they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
