Case Study
Your setting has just held a grandparents’ morning, which you helped to organise. You are now spending some time reflecting on how it went.
The children’s grandparents came in to nursery and enjoyed refreshments with the children, and then spent some time looking at a display the children had specially prepared. The grandparents then watched as the children performed some of the songs they had learnt in music time. Finally, the grandparents were each given a picture that their grandchild had made for them, showing them with their grandparents.
You noticed that Jack, who is normally well-behaved, was withdrawn and irritable during the morning, but because there was so much going on, you didn’t have much time to spend with him. He doesn’t have any living grandparents, so the setting invited his aunt and uncle instead.
You had lots of lovely feedback from the grandparents as they were leaving, although one grandparent said that they didn’t really understand what the morning was for, and another said they had thought the morning was fantastic, but that they didn’t enjoy the refreshments as the tea was not very hot and the biscuits were too hard.
- What went really well?
- What didn’t go so well?
- Why do you think Jack may have been withdrawn and irritable?
- What could you change for next time to try to prevent Jack’s unusual behaviour?
- How would you respond to the grandparents’ feedback?
- What could you do next time to improve the grandparents’ experience of the morning?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
