Understand the use of risk assessments in relation to health and safety

Case Study
Your setting has recently recruited a new member of staff who is now working as your supervisor. She has told you that you are not allowed to lift a patient under any circumstances as it contravenes health and safety guidelines. You are concerned that failing to help a patient from their bed to their chair contravenes their human rights.
- What are the rights of the patient in this situation?
- What are the risks to the patient of this no lifting rule?
- What are the rights of the staff?
- What are the risks to staff if the no lifting rule is ignored?
- How can the rights of both the patient and staff be met?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
