Case Study
Before coming to live in the care home, Nell always enjoyed her daily morning walk up to the local shops. She never missed a day. Chatting to a few of the shopkeepers, seeing the buses come and go, Nell had her routine. She knew her route and seemed to keep to it reliably, despite increasing memory problems. Nell has now been at the home for a month. She is desperate to leave and constantly pulls at the front door. She is a very energetic person, and seems bored. The fact is, she never leaves the home.
1. What do you think might help in this situation? 2. Why does Nell want to leave?3. What risks to Nell are there of her managing to leave the home? 4. Why is it important to try to find out as much as possible about Nell?5. What course of action might you take? 6. What risk will you need to assess?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
