Case Study

The Little Giggles nursery in the middle of a deprived inner city has a lot of children who are from single parent families with very few of them having any extended family support. The manager at Little Giggles decides to approach the care home, which is located just down the road from the nursery, to see if they would be interested in trialling a new initiative to have a befriending scheme between the care home and nursery. Linking an elderly resident with a child at the nursery. There would be an exchange of visits starting with the care home clients (who have volunteered of course) visiting the young children and finding out all about them. Once settled with each other, the children would start going to visit the adults at their care home. It is expected that the care home clients would come in and talk to children, read them stories, and just be around to listen to children and encourage them. She explains that they should feel comfortable to let Matthew sit with the other children and join in but stay close by. She then says when they come back in in 2 days’ time the key worker will be there to meet them.
  1. What do you think of this idea?
  2. What benefits could there be for the children?
  3. What benefits could there be for the care home clients?
  4. Can you think of anyway this scheme might develop even more?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
