Case Study

Saskia is a very quiet little girl who has been in the nursery for about 8 weeks now. She does not seem to have the confidence to just walk into an activity where other children are and start playing, even though she is 3 years old and was at different setting before coming to this one. Her key worker is concerned and tries to spend more time with her but feels she almost needs 1:1 support for a while. She decides to ask if she could enlist the help of the setting volunteer currently helping in another room. He is an older gentleman named Leon and the key worker knows that Saskia gets on particularly well with her granddad so thinks she might respond well to Leon.
  1. How might having Leon linked to Saskia help her to be more confident?
  2. What sort of things do you think he could help with?
  3. Should this not be the role of the key worker?
  4. Could Saskia become too attached to Leon and make things worse?
  5. What should Leon be told about Saskia, if anything?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
