Case Study
Mei Lien is a SENCo in a primary school and coordinates the SEN support for children in the reception class. She has experience and training in supporting children with SEN in the early years. Anna, the Headteacher, asks Mei Lien if she should also be coordinating support for children with English as an Additional Language as their needs will be very similar to that of children with communication and speech difficulties.
Mei Lien is concerned as she has no experience or training in supporting children with EAL and is worried that Anna is confusing EAL with learning needs.
- What would you say to Anna if you were Mei Lien?
- Where could you go for help and training in supporting children with EAL?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
