Case Study
Emily is a 78-year-old lady recently admitted to residential care. She has found it difficult to settle. She is assisted to get undressed at night and is put into bed by the care staff. However Emily doesn’t sleep for long and wakes in the night. Staff find it difficult to get her back into bed.On discussing this with Emily’s daughter it was discovered that Emily has rarely managed to sleep all night. She’s used to having a cup of tea when she wakes and then going back to bed again. She tends to wake up early because of back pain and prefers to nap in her chair from around 6am onwards.
- Explain the steps that would need to be taken in order for Emily to have choice and control over decisions made by the care staff.
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
