Case Study

Jane has Alzheimer’s and is blind. She has temporarily moved into your care home after being hurt in a fall on some slippery ice. Bill, her husband, was also injured in the fall, and is unable to care for his wife at home. Social services decided that Jane should be moved to a permanent care home but Bill is distressed by this idea as the home is far away from his family and friends and they wouldn’t be able to visit or take him to see Jane. Social services tell Bill that the decision is in Jane’s best interests.
- Is this the best action that could be taken?
- Who should make the final decision?
- Name two pieces of legislation that would have a bearing on the decision and explain why they are relevant and important.
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
