Case Study
Rashida is an 84-year-old woman who has recently returned home after a short stay in care. This was due to her having a fall and fracturing her hip (FNOF). Rashida lives alone and now uses a walking frame. She has Parkinsonism, and she is also showing signs of dementia. Her daughter Uzma does not live locally and can’t get to Rashida every day. One day, when visiting, Uzma finds Rashida sitting in her chair after being brought home by the ambulance service. Uzma asks Rashida why they had left her on her own. Rashida says that Joyce, her next door neighbour, visits often so she told staff that she would be ok. Lucy immediately contacts the care home manager to seek advice.
- What should have taken place?
- What was not in place for Rashida?
- Who should have completed a home assessment?
- Write an action plan for Rashida, that you would implement if this case had been referred to you as the manager of the care home.
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
