Be able to respond to inappropriate behaviour

Carry out a case study on a child in your setting who is exhibiting challenging behaviour.

Observe the child in a variety of situations, i.e. outdoor play, independent play, practitioner-led activities, etc., and record your observations informally. Remember to use initials and not full names of children to protect confidentiality.
Discuss the triggers you have found for the challenging behaviour with your line manager, the child’s parents and other practitioners who may be involved with the child. Always remember to follow your setting’s rules on confidentiality. Reach agreement together on ways in which you can promote positive behaviour for the child you are working with. Implement the strategies and monitor their effectiveness. Reflect on the way in which you have approached this task. Have you been effective in your observations, in communicating to others and responding to the way in which the situation developed? What would you do differently next time?
