Case Study

You work with a colleague whom you like and respect. However, you have noticed that she does not do much to encourage children’s communication, language and literacy. She seems to spend more time telling the children what to do than actually listening or engaging in their attempts to communicate.
- What steps might you take to help improve the situation?
- How might the children be affected if you don’t do anything to resolve the issue?
- What would you do to model good practice in encouraging children’s communication, language and literacy?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
