Case Study

You are the manager of a care home. The Director has shared with you the news that she would like to change the shift patterns for all staff, giving all staff a mixture of late and early shifts. The reason for this change is to cover the lunch period more effectively and to provide better continuity of care for individuals. It does make sense, but you are nervous about how staff will react to the change and how you can convince them that the change will also benefit them. You can use examples from your own practice if they are relevant to support your views.
  1. Consider how you would manage this situation. How would you persuade staff to adapt to these changes?
  2. How will you convince them that the changes will be worthwhile?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your assessor.
