Practical health and safety when with young children

Case Study

Steven is 8 years old and he loves nothing more than to spend his free time playing with his Lego and gets it out in the living room at every opportunity. He does, however, have a sister Fiona aged just 18 months. Fiona is into everything and wants to spend time watching her older brother, playing wherever he is and with whatever he has. Fiona still puts everything in her mouth and not only is this a choking hazard but it annoys Steven. The carer is the only adult in the house and needs to get meals prepared and the house cleaned, so cannot watch them both all the time
  1. How can you find a solution to this problem that keeps the toddler safe and happy and also her older brother Steven?
  2. Consider what other activities are similar.
  3. Is it fair to stop Steven from playing with Lego until Fiona is past the stage of putting everything in her mouth
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
