Promote nutrition and hydration in adult care settings

Case Study

Marion, a lady in her 70s at the care home, is struggling with depression. You notice that when she’s having a really low day, she doesn’t want to do anything physical, picks at the food you give her, and doesn’t want to leave her room and socialise with the other residents. You talk to her daughter and she tells you that her mum is a great baker and used to enjoy baking for her and the grandchildren when they would visit her at home.
  1. What are the benefits of food and exercise for people who suffer with depression?
  2. What foods could you start offering her that may help to lift her mood?
  3. How could you use the information you’ve been given by her daughter to encourage Marion to eat and to get involved in life at the care home when she’s feeling low?
It is rare that there is just one way to respond to a scenario or situation, so do not consider that the response you have chosen to this scenario will be judged as right or wrong. Share your scenario with a work colleague and ask them to tell you if they think you have responded appropriately. Ask them to challenge your response if necessary. You do not need to submit this task for assessment unless asked to do so by your tutor.
